Cooking with the Kids!

August 22nd, 2008

This is always fun in my house. My kids love to cook and make a mess!! I pick up some cheap packet cake mixes which keep the kids busy and it also makes some yummy treats for the day. Cookie cutters are also fun when making some yummy biscuits.

Kids can also be a great help at dinner time. They can help put the ingredients in and mix.

Here is a nice recipe from my mums cook book we always like to use:-

Yummy Jam Drops

Ingredients
• 125g butter, softened
• 100g (1/2 cup) caster sugar
• 1 tsp vanilla essence
• 1 egg
• 190g (1 1/4 cups) self-raising flour
• Plain flour, to dust
• 115g (1/3 cup) strawberry or raspberry jam
Method
1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Line 2 baking trays with non-stick baking paper. Use an electric beater to beat the butter, sugar and vanilla essence in a medium bowl until pale and creamy. Add the egg and beat until combined. Sift flour over the butter mixture and stir until combined.

2. Use lightly floured hands to roll teaspoonfuls of mixture into balls. Place on the prepared trays, about 5cm apart. Use a lightly floured finger to make an indentation in the centre of each ball. Spoon 1/2 tsp of jam into the centre of each biscuit.

3. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes, swapping trays halfway through cooking, or until the biscuits are cooked through and light golden. Remove biscuits from the oven. Set aside on trays for 30 minutes to cool completely.

Always remember that kids need supervision in the kitchen.

Holidays with the Kids!

August 19th, 2008

Need a family holiday, but not sure were to go? Trying to find somewhere that is family friendly but don’t know where to start?

You want your family holiday to be full of good times and something to remember. Trying to find accommodation, holiday attractions can be a stressful experience.

Here are some ideas I have come across over the years.

Skiing Holiday with the whole family in Australia:-There are many mountains in Australia that provide excellent Ski Holidays. A Ski holiday is something you can all do as a family regardless of how old you are. The Ski resorts now offer quality ski schools, crèches for the kids and many alternative snow activites.

It’s all about having a fun and enjoyable holiday!

Camping with the Kids:-
Camping with kids is a memorable experience that will be remembered for years. It is a cost effective family holiday. There are many option to camping, you can use a tent, caravan or a cabin. There are many camping grounds and caravan parks in Australia. What a great holiday idea, somewhere that the kids can play freely and create their own fun, at the same time getting back to nature.

Just imagine the birds and animals, swimming in the streams and ponds, the plants and trees and then the many activities that will provide so much excitement. The possibilities are endless!

Theme Park Holidays:-

This would be the ultimate family holiday for the kids and the adults! This is definitely a holiday that will be packed full of fun, excitement and things to do for the whole family.

You can take your pick of many theme parks in Australia. Many offer packages with accommodation and family day passes.

First Time Mums over Thirty!

August 18th, 2008

Congratulations, being a parent is the most difficult job in the world, but also the most rewarding (at times!).

Are there any mums out there like me? I had my first baby at 33 years of age and my second at 38 years of age. Life is so different for us now, but I would not swap it for anything. My time disappears so fast now that I am a stay at home mum to 2 daughters.

The stigma of being a mum over 30 is being erased by all the mums over 30 out there. People say there are some advantages to waiting to have children, including using life experiences and applying them to raising children. You can also be more financially stable at older parents.

The question to ask yourself is :

“is there a right time to have a baby?”

The “Right” time for some women to have a baby may be in their twenties. I agree that physically this is a good time to start a family. You seem to have more energy in your twenties. However more and more women are choosing to start a family later in life. Apart from the physical factors, older women often feel more settled and financially secure .

At the end of the day, the choice is yours. We choose to start a family when the time is right, not what the experts say.
